The majority of Izinto Zimveli Beaders
come from two informal settlements, a township, and a rural community around
East London, Eastern Cape - namely Duncan Village, Ducats, Mdantsane and
Kwelera Location.
Here is a picture of Duncan
Village Informal Settlement. Six of our beaders are currently staying in
these shacks. You can see Iris Ncanywa's shack in the lower right hand
corner.
Below, is a picture of
the Ducats Informal Settlement, just outside of East London, where six of
our beaders are currently living. Ducats is a relatively new informal settlement
which sprang up around a refuse site. The tap seen in the picture is the only
one supplying the entire Ducats settlement.

KHOLIWE NKOHLA
Kholiwe
was born in 1960 and is a single mom. She has one daughter (age 15)
Originally
from Kwelera, she now resides in the Ducats Informal Settlement.
Kholiwe
is a very fastt and neat beader and is also very good at beading
traditional Xhosa items

Meet ...
NOWETHU QOMANI
Nowethu
was born 1960 and is divorced with one son, Ayanda, age 21. He was
recently stabbed by some "tsotsies" in Mdantsane and spent a
long while recovering in hospital. Nowethu has taught her son how to
bead and together they produce some of the finest work.
Nowethu
is originally from Ndevana (near Berlin), but now resides in Duncan
Village Informal Settlement.

NOBONEPHI MAVIS THEMBANI
Mavis
was born in 1973 and has two children, a son aged 9 who stays with her
brother in Cape Town, and another son (Okuhle) aged 2 who lives with her
in the Ducats Informal Settlement.

is originally from Mavuya, near Indwe but now resides in Ducats. |

Noluntu was born in 1965
and is one of the few women that is married. She has 2 children, a boy
(13) and a girl (8).

Iris
was born 1963 and is a single mom with two children, a girl (13) and a
boy (9). She currently resides in Duncan Village and, like most of the
women in the squatter camp, has lost her home many times due to shack
fires.

MBULELO CYRUS NGOBO
Cyrus
is a young man full of entrepreneurial spirit. He is a self-taught
beader and shows great creativity and a thirst for knowledge.
He is
very skilful at adapting his talents to the latest fashion trends -
beaded items of jewellery are very popular at present and his work is
very much in demand. |

Izinto Zimveli would like to
extend their heartfelt condolences to one of our beaders, Nokwezi, who
lost her husband (age 44) last month. She is currently 8 months pregnant and we
wish her every strength in this difficult time.
